After six amazing years of performances (each year from Sep-May, with the occasional hiatus!), Audible Think has transitioned from a twice-monthly to a periodic Concert Presenter. All of the great musicians (local, regional, national, and international) that participated in the series of the years deserve the credit for the success of the series with their amazing performances which we will not soon forget! (Feel free to peruse the archived posts in the right margin of this page.)

The demands of life (!) have made it so that the regular series is impossible to maintain, but the cool spirit of those shows, gigs, events, happenings, "shoulda-been-theres", and more, will continue as occasional special concerts, which are in the planning stage now. Please bookmark this site, and check back here for updates!

READ ON: Here are a couple of interesting links:

Jazz Listener's Guide: Jazz Piano Players

Practice Ideas for Aspiring Jazz Musicians

<!--

From Fred Fried: "This is my latest CD and I’m tremendously happy about it. Those of you who have heard my group at Bubala’s in Provincetown will be familiar with bassist Michael Lavoie and drummer Miki Matsuki. They are absolutely wonderful musicians and it was a ball working with them on this recording of all original tunes. This also marks my first trio CD with my nylon 8-string guitar. Built by Luthier Steve Connor it has a low A below the low E and a high A above the high E and sounds amazing.
Fred Fried - 8-String Acoustic Guitar
Michael Lavoie - Bass
Miki Matsuki- Drums"

http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=7814078289

ABOUT FRED FRIED: Amidst a sea of talented guitarists playing today, Fred believes that what sets him apart, especially from other 7-string (8-string) guitarists, is that “although there are players who work out arrangements that have a pianistic aspect, I have trained myself to actually improvise in this manner. That is, I can sit down and improvise inner lines or bass lines or comp under a melody or improvised line. I have developed the ability to harmonize a melody any number of ways. This doesn’t mean that I won’t just let fly on a single line solo. I certainly enjoy that, but I think the harmonic and pianistic aspects of my playing give the guitar greater dimension. I don’t, however, consider this a tremendous feat in any way. It’s just the way I have trained myself to play and I consider myself very fortunate in that over time a very distinctive sound and style has evolved.

<!--

In their improvisations they investigate the minuscule details within the sonic palette of their instruments by “zooming in” to a whole new world of sonic textures. With the help of some analog electronics, they place their sounds under an imaginary microscope, to orchestrate the overtones, micro-beats, wind flows, clicking of the pads, impact of the stick on the drumhead, and sub tone effects, without losing their strong sense of melody and groove. They also share an interest in improvising with multiple-tempo layerings, melodic cells, cut and paste methods, extended techniques and integrating uncommon (analog) instruments such as the Autoharp and the Lyricon. Their music shows influences from Ornette Coleman, Steve Lacy, György Ligeti, and Conlon Nancarrow, as well as minimalists like Morton Feldman, and ambient music pioneer Brian Eno. Their debut CD “Sequence” on Trytone Records has received critical acclaim in the international press.

Saxophonist and composer Jorrit Dijkstra has been an active member of Amsterdam’s vivid jazz and improvisation scene since 1985, before moving to Boston early 2002. The critical press compares his clear, flexible sound and lyrical improvisation to Ornette Coleman, Paul Desmond and John Zorn, showing the broad spectrum of his saxophone style. Besides the alto saxophone he plays the Lyricon (the first electronic wind instrument from the 70’s) and uses electronics to process his saxophone sounds live on stage. He has released ten CDs of his own music on the Songlines, BVHaast, Trytone, Skycap and Clean Feed labels, and he has worked with Anthony Braxton, Gerry Hemingway, Herb Robertson, Barre Phillips, John Butcher, Willem Breuker, and Guus Janssen. In 1995 he received the prestigious Podium Prize from the Dutch Jazz Foundation, and in 1998 a Fulbright grant to study and teach at the New England Conservatory in Boston. As a composer, Jorrit has written commissions for the Amstel Saxophone Quartet, Tetzepi Big Band, Kaida, Duo X, and The Harvard Jazz band. Jorrit is current projects include The Flatlands Collective (with musicians from Chicago) and his eight-piece ensemble Pillow Circles, commissioned by the North Sea Jazz Festival 2009. In Boston he is active with Curt Newton, Pandelis Karayorgis, James Coleman and Steve Drury.

John Hollenbeck’s journey has been one of the most remarkable in contemporary music. Building on a wealth of experience in jazz and world styles as well as a deep interest in contemporary composition and spiritual practice, he has forged a lyrical new musical language, as accessible and expressive as it is advanced. He has worked with many of the world’s leading musicians in jazz (Bob Brookmeyer, Fred Hersch, Tony Malaby, the Village Vanguard Orchestra, Kenny Wheeler), world music (Pablo Ziegler), and new music (Meredith Monk). John Hollenbeck was named as both the Rising Star Composer and the Rising Star Arranger of the Year in the 2008 & 2009 Down Beat Magazine’s Critics Poll. Down Beat magazine has in previous years recognized him as a “Rising Star” in the Composer, Jazz Artist, Arranger, Big Band, and Jazz Group (Claudia Quintet) categories. John’s first large ensemble recording, A Blessing, received a 2006 Grammy Nomination, and in 2007, John was awarded the prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship. In 2009, John self-released a CD of chamber music, “Rainbow Jimmies”, comprised of recent commissioned pieces which feature: The Claudia Quintet, Mark Stewart, Todd Reynolds, Ethos Percussion Group, Youngstown State Percussion Ensemble and Saxophone Quartet. In addition, the John Hollenbeck Large Ensemble released its second recording, “eternal interlude” in August 2009. The band showcases Greenblatt’s lyrical and rhythmically quirky compositions combined with each musician’s extraordinary improvisational gifts.

Each song on the recording has a unique mood and style. M. Harjito of Wesleyan University in Connecticut is acknowledged as one of the foremost musicians and composers of gamelan music in the world today. In addition to teaching at Wesleyan University, he is also a visiting professor of music at Brown University, the University of Chicago, the New York City Gamelan, as well as UMASS Dartmouth. He is also a regular guest artist at concerts of gamelan music throughout the United States and the world. He has composed many traditional and contemporary pieces for gamelan, including collaborations with tap dance, symphony and chamber orchestra, bagpipes, and jazz.

Srihadeni Harjito is a master dancer who also is a reknown vocalist in the Javanese tradition. She has taught at Wesleyan University and performed throughout the world.

Triwik Harjito has performed Indonesian dance and traditional music with many master artists in the United States and Indonesia.

About Javanese gamelan

The Gamelan is an ancient orchestra from Indonesia dating back many centuries. It includes tuned gongs, metallophones, a wooden marimba, 2-string violin, bamboo flute, zither, and male and female singing. The instruments are played in a modal polyphony - many layers of sound - that function to outline structure, to control time and rhythm, and to state a basic melody known as the balungan (‘skeleton’). The melody is then enhanced by recreating it in complex patterns of improvisation. It was traditionally played in villages and in the royal courts in Indonesia and is related to other gong chime ensembles of Southeast Asia, such as the Philippine kulintang. Gamelan music can accompany dance and drama – such as the wayang kulit shadow puppet theater – or be performed instrumentally, known as klenengan.

The program will include:

1. Ladrang Wilejung, sléndro pathet manyura.

2. Ladrang Naglarirasa, sléndro pathet manyura.

3. Ladrang Semburat Wangi, sléndro pathet manyura.

4. Lancaran Kotek, sléndro pathet manyura.

5. He studied guitar, composition, and music theory at UMASS-Dartmouth where he received a BA in Theory/Composition and has performed throughout the Northeast USA making music that is inspired by both contemporary improvisation and avant-garde jazz. Frenette is also a freelance recording engineer.He has performed and/or recorded with such artists as Tatsuya Nakatani, Jack Wright, Joe Giardullo, Andy McWain, Forbes Graham, Gordon Allen, Sarah Weaver, Harvey Sorgen, Brian Melick, Michael Snow, Gwen Laster, Larry Packer, Martha Colby, Lori Freedman, David Gamper, Al Margolis, Luther Gray, Ryan McGuire, Jeff Kimmel, Adam Dotson, Jonathan LaMaster, Andrew Hickman, Eric Platz, Todd Keating and Gabe Cabral. In 2007, Fuller Street Music released Kevin’s first date as a leader: Connections. That album featured Frenette with Tatsuya Nakatani on percussion, Andy McWain on piano and Todd Keating on bass.

***Forbes Graham's newest composition, "Kleinman", was written specifically for the new music ensemble Normal Love. Maddeningly complex and rife with numerological symbolism, it represents the pinnacle of his uncompromising principles. At present, he is working on a new composition for trumpet, two drum machines and live electronics which will be premiered at this year's Festival of New Trumpet in New York City. The piece is currently entitled "Variations on the Fibonacci Sequence".
Forbes is currently playing music with The Interdimensional Science Research Orchestra and the Full Metal Revolutionary Jazz Ensemble. He also works with a number of other musicians in the Boston area, and has his own quartet featuring Ryan McGuire, Raqib Hassan, and Luther Gray. Forbes has toured America numerous times playing in various groups. He has also lent his trumpet to many studio recordings for the likes of such artists as Daughters, One Am Radio, The Red Chord, Love Life, Irepress, and more. His label Ricecontrol helped introduce the music of Jeromes Dream, The Day of Man as Man, Dysrhythmia, and XThoughtstreamsX to unsuspecting audiences. Ricecontrol has returned and will be releasing Forbes' newest album "I Won't Stop" this summer. Self recorded and produced and mastered by James Plotkin (O.L.D., Khanate, Phantomsmasher), "I Won't Stop" is a provocative electro-acoustic document. Never one to stick to one style "I Won't Stop" traverses the genres of free improvisation, drum n' bass, abstract glitch electronics, noise, and more. Besides music Forbes enjoys vegan cuisine, comedy, studying Taoism, and hanging out with his beautiful girlfriend Lillian.

***Bassist and composer Ryan McGuire has performed with Jim Hobbs, Raqib Hassan, Forbes Graham and others, and has toured the U.S. and Canada on several occasions. Originally from Cape Cod, McGuire studied composition and performance at UMass-Lowell and Berklee, and has recordings on Tzadik, Hydrahead, Robotic Empire, and Holy Roar Records. He currently performs with Dilettante, Raqib Hassan's Interdimensional Science Research Orchestra, and the Forbes Graham Quartet.

***Adam Dotson is a improvising euphoniumist in the Boston area. He has performed with Joe Morris, Dave Douglas, Gerald Cleaver, Allan Chase, Bob Nieske, Luther Gray, and Steve Lantner. He can be seen playing in the Boston area with the Greek brass band Poladactolos Orchestra as well as the Haitian band Nakawoot. He is a graduate of the New England Conservatory and Interlochen Arts Academy.

<http://cdbaby.com/cd/kevinfrenette>
<http://www.polyrhythmatics.net/>
<http://www.audiblethink.com>
<!--

I'm/we're in the process of still piecing together the Fall 2007 schedule of Audible Think (eight performances in the fall and eight more in the spring). The response to playing on the series has been really great-- the space (thanks to Gallery X), the vibe (thanks to the audience), and the scene (thanks to the community of musicians) --- has made this a place where people WANT TO PLAY. I'm glad that something that started in the spring of '04 is still running, and that the circles have spun out to include some great musicians from all across New England, including NY, Penn, and Chicago... (Anyone who runs a series can tell you that the other side of the coin is that sometimes it feels like real work, that it can make a LONG day, even longer, and that the thought of stopping (and letting someone else bust their @#$%^& seems appealing. Some great nights of music, appreciative audiences (many are students from UMass-Dartmouth), and about 1000 oatmeal-raisin cookies put those thoughts out of my mind. (true). Stay tuned for the schedule, and please come out to as many Audible Think nights as you can... THANK YOU!
<!--

Utilizing drumset, gongs, cymbals, singing bowls, metal objects, sticks and bows, he creates collages of sound, which combine the sense of space and beauty found in traditional Japanese folk music with the extended techniques of New Music, yet with great energy and intensity. Although his music defies category or genre, it can be viewed as a cross-cultural mixture of improvised music, experimental music, jazz, free jazz, and rock. In addition to live solo and ensemble performances, he has provided sound design for films and television projects. The latest of these was the performance of an improvised sound score for silent movie- “The Water Magician” (1933, directed by Kenji Mizoguchi), which was part of exhibition of Hiroshi Sugimoto Photograph at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC. He is the recent recipient of The Bronx Arts Council Individual Artist grant. Also he has been seIected PennPAT Artist Roster 2007(Pennsylvania Performing Art on Tour). In addition to his work as a percussionist, Nakatani heads H&H Production, an independent record label and recording studio based in Easton, Pennsylvania.
<!--

The son of a high school English teacher turned jazz musician, Donny performed with his father's band in his teenage years and then attended Berklee college of Music where he studied with Herb Pomeroy, Gary Burton, Joe Viola, George Garzone and Billy Pierce. While at Berklee, Donny began a four-year tenure in Gary Burton's band. Since moving to New York in 1991, McCaslin has performed and toured with a wide variety of groups including Steps Ahead, Danilo Perez and the Motherland Project, Tom Harrell, Brian Blade, John Pattitucci, Lan Xang, David Binney, Luciana Souza, Eddie Gomez, George Gruntz, Billy Hart, Santi Debriano, The Mingus Big Band, and many others. His three solo records, "Exile and Discovery", "Seen From Above", and "The Way Through" have all garnered critical acclaim. 2006 will see the release of two new solo efforts "Give and Go" on Criss Cross Jazz, and "Soar" on Sunnyside Records as well as the premiere of new original music commissioned by Chamber Music of America. Donny will also be touring extensively with the Dave Douglas Quintet, the Maria Schneider Jazz Orchestra, and his own group.
